Dr. Shelby Wyatt

Dr. Shelby Thomas Wyatt is a native of Chicago, Illinois. His parents instilled the importance of securing a solid education at an early age. He is the product of the public education system, respectfully Chicago Public Schools and the state university system of Illinois. He began his teaching career as a day to day substitute teacher in 1987. He is certified to teach business education in grades 6-12. Dr. Wyatt is also a National Board Certified Teacher/Counselor with a Master Teacher certificate.

In 1993, he began a doctoral program in Counselor Education at Northern Illinois University. He earned that degree in 2000. His doctoral dissertation is entitled “Measuring the Effectiveness of an Afrocentric Male Mentoring program with adolescent African American males.”

In January, 2004 he created the Kenwood Academy Brotherhood, a school based male mentoring/leadership organization. This multi-faceted program has increased the graduation and college matriculation rates, empowered personal-social development, and proved to its participants that achieving the education of your mind can be fun. It is a nationally recognized program. On February 7, 2012 he organized the Kenwood Brotherhood, Inc. as a not for profit organization. In April, 2008, he received the Family and Community Empowerment Award from The College Board’s NOSCA.

In August and October of 2009, an article and manual were published by the American School Counselor Association regarding The Brotherhood. Dr. Wyatt travels across the country assisting in the creation of school based male mentoring organizations and presenting at local, state and national conferences on this topic. He is also an adjunct professor at Argosy University on the subject of child and adolescent counseling
