Board of Directors

Dr. Shelby Thomas Wyatt is a native of Chicago, Illinois. His parents instilled the importance of securing a solid education at an early age. He is the product of the public education system, respectfully Chicago Public Schools and the state university system of Illinois. He began his teaching career as a day to day substitute teacher in 1987. He is certified to teach business education in grades 6-12. Dr. Wyatt is also a National Board Certified Teacher/Counselor with a Master Teacher certificate. To read more visit the Dr. Shelby Wyatt page.

Rev Stevie Powell has been a part of the Kenwood Academy Brotherhood since its inception January 9, 2004. He has assisted with fundraising for day to day operations and especially the Fall and Spring Freedom College Tours. His two sons, Stevie Maurice and Marcus were Brotherhood members. Currently Rev. Powell serves as the Vice President for the Kenwood Brotherhood, Inc. He is a Clinical Mental Health Professional and a Lead Restorative Practices coach and training consultant. He has an earned BA degree in Psychology and a MA in Clinical Mental Health in counseling from Argosy University-Chicago.

Whitney Davis is the current Board Chairperson of the Kenwood Brotherhood Inc. She has been in her current role for four years. Before joining the KBI Board of Directors, she interned with the Kenwood Academy Brotherhood.

JaKendra Williams served a Brotherhood intern 2014-15. She received her Master’s degree in Counseling from Northern Illinois in 2015 with a focus in Mental Health, Post Secondary, and Career Counseling; obtaining a certificate in Career Development. JaKendra has 7 years’ experience in Socio-Emotional work with children and specialties include using trauma informed practices, Career and Transition Counseling.

Joyce V. Brown is a recognized school counseling leader, serving as a teacher, counselor and district director of School Counseling, within Chicago Public Schools (CPS), the nation’s third largest school district. Throughout her career, she has designed and implemented numerous programs focused on college and career readiness, high school transition practices and counselor leadership, especially for first generation populations. She was the chief architect of the CPS district-wide four-week summer transition program, Freshman Connection, for 20,000 freshmen and successfully developed and introduced a data driven comprehensive counseling model to repurpose the role of 400 high school counselors as college advising leaders.

She is president of Joyce V. Brown Consulting Group, an organization providing college and workforce readiness coaching and professional development to schools, school districts and non-profit agencies throughout the nation, and is a partner in the newly formed National Postsecondary Strategy Institute (NPSI), an organization that helps school districts organize, structure and implement a district wide postsecondary advising framework, focused on the integration of three components, leadership, a data strategy and school counselor engagement.

Loretta Lomax is a Chicago, Illinois business owner and community organizer, social justice advocate, public speaker and master gardener. She is a Kenwood Brotherhood Inc Board Member and is the designated social media manager and publicity coordinator for the organization.

Graduating from Dunbar High School and later acquiring a BS in Psychology from Roosevelt University. Ms. Lomax’s interests and work include community psychology research with emphasis on community development, family dynamics, promoting early childhood development and the issues facing young African-American males.

Loretta is the mother of one, a daughter who is a practicing RN. Ms. Loretta is an avid reader and a professional gardener. She has used her gardening skills to coordinate and implement many beautification projects in her community with praises and recognition from community residents.

Kenwood Brother Inc.

is the 501 (c) (3) not for profit organization that governs the Kenwood Academy Brotherhood. It was organized on February 7, 2012. Its purpose is to seek resources (financial and enrichment opportunities) to support the development of the Brotherhood. Donations received will support the activities of the Kenwood Academy Brotherhood. The board of Directors consists of a chairperson, vice chairperson, secretary, financial secretary, treasurer and adviser

The board meets monthly to::

Review the progress of the Brotherhood school based male mentoring organization
Support graduating Senior and Alumni college Scholarships
Raise funds for the day to day operation of the Brotherhood
Seek grant Funding
Build upon the Brotherhood brand
Collaborate on research concerning the Black male achievement gap

The Board of Directors organizes

The Brotherhood’s Culminating Award Ceremony in May, the Annual Fundraising Gala in October and the Alumni Holida Social in December.

A Advisory Council was created to assist the Board of Directors with accomplishing its annual goals. Currently, it is preparing for the 3rd Annual Fundraising Gala to be held on October 10, 2019.
